Yoichi Summer nature retreat
Yoichi is a great base for your next trip to Hokkaido. Sandwiched between the tourist destinations of Otaru and Niseko, Yoichi is still largely unknown and offers an authentic Japanese experience throughout the four seasons. Although it is easy to pass Yoichi by aside a short stop at Nikka Whiskey factory, Yoichi is actually a great base for a trip to Hokkaido.
Access from New Chitose Airport is a little over an hour by the newly completed and uncrowded motorway. If you take the JR train, it is just a short transfer at Otaru. Yoichi offers delicious restaurants serving local food, hot springs, and a variety of cultural events throughout the year. It is a quick drive to popular tourist destinations such as Shakotan Peninsula, Otaru, and Niseko. Sapporo is easily accesible for rainy days or shopping, which is difficult from Niseko.
Yoichi is known for its fruits, wine, and seafood. You can pick your own fruit or stock up on fresh vegetables at one of the many farms on the outskirts of town. Small farmers' markets are also held on weekends. At the Kakizaki and Nioka fish markets, you can get in-season seafood. Tasting at wineries is also recommended. Yoichi is famous for its Japanese whiskey, and Nikka's Taketsuru 17-year blend was awarded the world's best blended malt in 2014 and 2015.
The surrounding coastline and hills provide a wonderful natural playground. Kayaking on Shakotan's coastline is popular and guided tours are available. The back roads are ideal for road and mountain biking, and there are many hiking trails. Yoichi also has uncrowded waves suitable for surfing during the colder months. In winter, there are more than 10 ski resorts within an hour's drive.
